All I have to say is... GREEK FOOD is where it's at. Last weekend I attended Roanoke's Greek Festival. In the past I haven't had much Greek food, so I was super excited for all the new food there was to try! This festival was HUGE! They have over 20,000 people attend each year! They even offer a drive through for those in a hurry. They had a lot of things to do from face painting and crafts for the kiddos, to different Greek vendors with jewelry, soaps, decorations, etc.. There was even cultural dancing and music that you could watch and participate in. This festival was in full swing.
Now let's get back to the food. There were blue and white Greek tents everywhere with separate dining tents, food tents, and of course coffee and desert tents. We hit up the main food tent to fill our plates with some of the best food I've ever had. They served it buffet style, as the kindest people served. With so many options to choose from I ended up getting way to much. Let's just say my eyes were bigger than my stomach.
Dinner
1) Souvlaki (chicken) - This is kind of like a chicken kabob marinated in juices with onions and green peppers, then seasoned to perfection.
2) Dolmades - I was super excited to try these. I saw them on the travel channel awhile back. These are grape leaves filled with rice and herbs then steamed to perfection, a very earthy taste.
3) Tiropita - Oh my gosh. I am convinced anything wrapped or stuffed in filo dough has to be good and wow.. this was ... amazing. This is filo dough layered with an egg and cheese mixture.
4) Spanakopita - Once again filo dough... This is filo dough layered with spinach and feta cheese. SO GOOD
5) Greek Salad - This salad was packed full of feta cheese, red onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, and olives.
The great thing about Greek food is, it isn't heavy. After dinner we walked around a bit. After watching some dancing and music performances we were ready for dessert.
Dessert
1) Greek Coffee - Oh my gosh... For all my coffee lovers out there, you haven't had coffee until you've had Greek coffee. I was like a kid at Christmas time. I saw that coffee tent and I was gone. I got an iced coffee, it was thick and creamy. The top had a perfect fluff of coffee foam on top. Almost how frothed milk is but no milk here just coffee, It's a must try.
2) Baklava Sundae - Imagine vanilla ice cream covered in honey, nuts, syrup and filo dough.. sounds amazing right? It was.
This festival runs for 3 days each year, usually around September 15-17 , Friday - Sunday. If you live in Virginia this festival is a must go to. If you live far away, make the trip! You won't be disappointed . A couple travels all the way from Connecticut every year just for this festival, that shows you just how good it is. Check your surrounding area, you may have your own local Greek festival coming up! All I have to say is I can't wait for next years Greek Festival, Opa!
